Maintaining Handmade Paper
Since, there is a quality of permanence and there is a quality of style, many handmade paper collection belongs to the 15th to 18th century, whose permanence and durability is obvious, as they have stood the test of the time. Handmade papers are very strong type of papers and doesn't deteriorate with time, if stored properly i.e. away from dampness and moisture. They remain white, lustrous, and supple yet strong, are a pleasure to touch and a delight to the eye.Most of the Handmade paper possesses an inherent strength due to the quality of natural fibres that are physically processed without the use of any chemical fibres. Though, these papers remains the same for almost 100 years because of their outstanding features, like, inherited property of protection against insects, but, still there are certain guidelines that should be taken care of, if we want our handmade paper product to actually last for a longer period of time.
Tips on maintaining Handmade Paper & Paper Work:
- One should take care that paper needs temperature that ranges from 60 degrees to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and a relative humidity, which is above 30% but below 70%. Hot conditions cause the paper to become fragile and damp conditions results in yield, which feeds on sizing and fibers, thus destroying your master piece.
- Never hang the paper work over fireplaces, radiator, and warm air vents, to prevent temperature extremes and dust particles.
- Always avoid glass that is non-reflective because moisture condenses easily behind it, causing mold.
- If framing the handmade paper work, always use frames with high quality acid-free materials to fight migration of acids to the work.
- Always use wooden files over metal ones to store handmade paper work as they stabilize relative humidity, and do not rust.
- Never force open a roll of handmade paper, even strong paper is subject to creasing, cracking and tearing from the unrolling process.
- Never back fold creases, since, back-folding weakens the paper.
- Don't flatten paper that is brittle, stiff or badly torn, its better to leave the work to the conservator.
- Remember, cleaning and repairing documents can cause more damage and is therefore not recommended.
